The 2005 Nobel Prize for Chemistry was awarded for developing, over several decades, an amazingly simple method of “link-and-chop” to form new carbon-carbon double bonds and create molecules which would be very difficult to synthesize by conventional methods that involve a large number of synthetic steps requiring a variety of chemicals and reagents, energy and other resources. This saves many steps in synthesis, saves resources and obviously reduces the harmful impact on the ecosystem.
